Coin Flip explores the tumultuous Vietnam War Era from 1964 to 1975. It describes events in the lives of young Americans facing the draft amid societal upheaval. This narrative reveals their struggles with the realities of war, the sexual revolution, and the rise of counterculture. As fate often dictated their futures through random draft numbers, they navigated a landscape of activism and idealism. Through personal stories, the book highlights their resilience and the profound impact of this chaotic period on their lives.
The Vietnam War Era was an eventful and crucial time in the lives of young people. During that time, we encountered the draft, the sexual revolution, psychedelic drugs, flower children, politics, rock concerts, turmoil on college campuses, and the beginning of the women’s movement. We were involved in all of these things or witnessed them firsthand. Over everything loomed the specter of the war. During those times, we tried to plan and prepare for our futures and exercise control over our lives. Events and forces beyond our control interfered. Life and death could depend on a birth date, a randomly drawn draft number, a nervous national guardsman, or even the flip of a coin.

LETTERS FROM HOME
Letters from Home consists of a collection of original letters. The people who wrote them were Americans, most of them members of an extended family. They were written during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. The letters in this book contain the thoughts, concerns, hopes, dreams, worries, and anxieties of Americans during World War II, in their own words. There are many individual stories within those documents. Jim decided to create and publish Letters from Home to honor those who endured many hardships during World War II and to educate current and future generations about the sacrifices they made.

THE AUTHOR
Jim Thome earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from the University of Michigan. He was inducted into the Army at Fort Wayne in Detroit, Michigan. He served a tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam with the 18th Military Police Brigade. After that, he earned a Juris Doctor Degree from Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. He practiced law throughout the state of Michigan for more than 40 years. He is an avid student of history. Most of the material in the stories, commentary, and footnotes in the publications described on this site comes from the author’s personal knowledge and experiences.
